Bahrain's Merchants have always been open to new and improved ways of doing business. Pehaps, that is why the private sector with first too harness the power of a united private sector with the formation of the "General Traders' Associatio" in 1039. Asian business leaders like Mr.Ashraf (Above) played a prominent role in this pioneering business group.
The history of commercial relations in Bahrain have been dominated by the Kingdom's trade with Asian countries. Quite apart from the energy, the muscle power and the professional partnership of the Asian expatriates in Bahrain's growth and development, the Kingdom has been selected by many an Asian businessman as a base for the establishment or expansion of his business.
The names that are on the Foundr's list of the "General Traders' Association" which was a predecessor body to the BCCI in1939 and the first Chamber of Commerce in the Arabian Gulf, is a roll-call of Asian honour : Mr.Ashraf, Mr.Asghar Ali, Mr.Syed Junaid.
A rare 1939 photo (above) shws Indian trader Shri Dhammanmal Issardas playing host to the royal families of two GCC States - the Emir of Kuwaitand the Emir of Bahrain with their sons and relatives.
Asian traders and entrepreneurs have enriched the business sector in the Kingdom and generated new ideas, new revenue streams and helped to stimulate the growth and development of the Kingsom.
Today the circle is growing as traders from further afield than the subcontinent are seeking to work with Bahraini companies and businessmen.
